In 1903 the San Francisco Produce Exchange merged with the Merchants’ Exchange. To accommodate itself, the enlarged Merchants’ Exchange razed its former quarters and built in its place the building that stands today at 465 California Street. Tapped for the ambitious project was the notable architect from Chicago, Daniel H. Burnham. At its core was built the stunning Trading Hall, located on the ground floor of the building, attracting the city’s most influential business leaders to conduct commerce. The Merchants Exchange was often known as the “Wall Street of the West.” The space served as the city's predominant Trading Hall from 1905 until it became a location of Bank of America in 1945 and has served as a the "Banking Hall" for the last three quarters of a century.
